Laindon, Essex
in the Domesday Book
"The Bishop [of London] holds Laindon which AElfryth, a certain woman, held in the time of King Edward as 1 manor and 9 hides. There were then 2 ploughs in demesne, now 3. The men had then 7 ploughs, now 6. There were then 8 villans, now 3. There are now 14 bordars. Then as now there were 6 slaves. There is woodland for 100 pigs, pasture for 100 sheep. It was then worth £9, now 10, but the bishop receives from it £14. Of this manor Ralph and William hold 3 hides and 80 acres and there is 1 plough in demesne and the men have 2, and it is worth 100s in the same valuation. The bishop received in demesne 100 sheep less 3 and 10 pigs. " |
