  Claremont Landscape Garden

A most unexpected oasis in urban Surrey, Claremont was one of the first and remains one of the finest of English landscape gardens. The chief feature is a serpentine lake, with walking paths providing unexpected vistas. There is also a unique 18th century grass amphitheatre. The list of gardeners who contributed to Claremont's design reads like a who's who of landscape gardening. John Vanbrugh began the garden, and Capability Brown, William Kent, and Charles Bridgeman all contributed.

  Great Fosters

One of the finest Arts and Crafts gardens in Europe grace the grounds of this Elizabethan house in the heart of Windsor Forest. The house is now a hotel, but the gardens remain for all to enjoy, bordered on three sides by a Saxon moat. The gardens are designed to imitate the effect of a Persian carpet, with intricate formal patterns. At the centre is the Drake Sundial, which dates to 1589 and is owned by the descendants of Sir Francis Drake. There is a turf amphitheate cut into the hillside, and a sunken rose garden to enjoy.
