  Bessie Surtees House
  

Bessie Surtees House A pair of historic 16th and 17th century timber-framed buildings which are now home to English Heritage's regional offices. The buildings represent excellent examples of half-timbered merchant's houses so typical of the Jacobean period. The interiors of Bessie Surtees's house feature wonderful plaster ceilings and oak panelling, with period furniture on display.

  Holy Jesus Hospital
  

Holy Jesus Hospital Holy Jesus Hospital is a mix of historic buildings dating back to the 14th century, when an Augustinian friary was established on the site. In the 16th century, following the dissolution of the friary, the monastic buildings were adapted to serve as fortifications for the short-lived Council of the North.

  Kirkharle
  

Kirkharle Kirkharle is the 1716 birthplace of landscape architect Capability Brown. What was once a farm courtyard has been converted to house the workshops and outlets of a variety of craftsmen. An exhibition on Brown's life and work is housed among the buildings, and plans are afoot to construct a serpentine lake according to plans drawn up by Brown.

  Souter Lighthouse
  

Souter Lighthouse A historic 19th century lighthouse overlooking a 2 mile stretch of beach, grasslands, and cliffs. Souter was the first electrically powered lighthouse in the world, and was built to ease passage for ships entering the Wear. Climb the 76 steps to the top of the tower for excellent views out to sea.
