A fine 13th/14th century gateway between Castle Square and the Minster Yard that surrounds Lincoln Cathedral. The gate was so named because in the Middle Ages tenants of the cathedral gathered here to pay their rents, and a chequered cloth of alternating black and white squares was used to aide the counting. more details ...
