Abingdon, Oxfordshire

Travel Information and nearby accommodation

Abingdon Abingdon is the oldest continuously inhabited town in the UK, set beside the River Thames south of Oxford. Abingdon has been settled since at least the early Saxon period. Alfred the great held the manor of Abingdon, and his descendant Athelstan had a royal residence here in he 10th century. There are a wealth of historic buildings to see in Abingdon, including the ruins of medieval Abingdon Abbey, set on the banks of the Thames.

The most easily recognisable symbol of Abingdon is, however, County Hall, built by a pupil of Sir Christopher Wren. This fine late Jacobean building houses a museum of Abingdon's local history ion its upper floor. Nearby is St Nicholas church, which dates to the Norman period. Beside the church is the late 15th century Abbey Gateway, and beside that is the Grammar School, founded by John Roysse in 1563. At the foot of Bridge Street stands the County Gaol (now a leisure centre) built by French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars. A few feet away is Abingdon Bridge, which is not one bridge but three, the oldest two of which date to the early 15th century. more details ...
