Fairfax House - Kitchen
The original kitchen was destroyed when the house became
a cinema in 1920. This recreated kitchen is located in what was the
rear parlour. The replica food on display is based on an actual meal
given by Viscount Fairfax on April 15th, 1763. The kitchen is furnished
with authentic tools and utinsels that would have been familiar to cooks
in the late 18th century.

The painted cutout figure is called
a "Kitchen Companion". These figures were often placed
near windows to give the impression that there were people present
within - a sort of early burglar deterrent! |

sit upon a table against the wall. Note the sugar cone in the
centre. Until the advent of sugar cubes, most sugar would come
in hard cones like this, and the cook would have to break off
small chunks with sugar tongs. |
Further food dishes,including a stuffed
pig's head. |
