This stone built detached cottage sleeps four people in two bedrooms in the village of Boldron near Barnard Castle, in Teesdale.

Black Barn is a stone built detached cottage in a rural location just five minutes walk from the village of Boldron, two miles from Barnard Castle on the northern edge of the Yorkshire Dales. With one double bedroom and one twin as well as a wet room, this cottage can sleep four people in luxury. The cottage also contains an open plan living area with a fitted kitchen, a dining area, a sitting room with a woodburning stove and a seperate study. Outside the cottage are spacious gardens with a patio area and garden furniture as well as off road parking for two cars. Beautifully decorated and with stunning views, Black Barn is a fabulous holiday cottage in a beautiful location.

The barn was lovely, in an isolated location and had been renovated to a good standard. I had read on Trip Advisor that the beds were uncomfortable, but the double bed I slept in was fine, but the bedding was not fresh, nor the towels, in fact the smell from the bedding kept me awake the first night. The duvet and the pillows in the double bed room needed washing properly. I washed all the towels and used a single duvet from the second bedroom which was fine. There was no welcome pack of basics, i.e. milk, etc. The cooking equipment was minimal and basic. If you have a dog, you could not walk from the barn without being harassed by the cattle (although I am used to livestock) it made it rather annoying, and sometimes threatening. All of the above spoilt the experience.

Fantastic location
Black Barn is beautifully renovated. It is warm and clean and the kitchen is well equipped. It is wonderful for viewing farm animals up close. The downstairs furnishings are adequate. The worst aspect of this cottage is the beds. We went well prepared with an additional foam topper for the double bed mattress. Despite this the beds were not comfortable The double bed was rickety and the mattress hard and lumpy. The mattresses on the single beds were totally inadequate. No springs and even a child would find them uncomfortable. We put both single mattresses on one bed but even that was not a success. An upgrade of the beds would make this cottage truly 5 star. Barnard Castle, the nearest town is quaint. The area has a lot to recommend it.

Fantastic 5*
We have just had an amazing week staying at Black Barn, the barn is amazing, the facilities are very good, the kitchen is so well equipped we could have baked a cake if we wanted to! It was a great point to travel from, went to Lakes, Hadrian's Wall, and Beamish. ( you must go) We have 2 children 2, & 8 they loved seeing the sheep and the cows. My only criticism is The Beds! They are terrible, it felt like the master bed was going to collapse when we turned over, and our 8 year old complained about his too. It's the only thing that would stop us going back again. It lets the Barn down as the calibre of the finish and facilities are 5*

We had a family holiday with 2 dogs and it was perfect. Beautiful location, beautiful cottage and friendly village. The cottage was constantly warm even with the -2 highs! I would recommend it to anyone. We shall definitely be returning!

felt owners could have been more thoughtful...
Very nice accommodation. Disappointed to find no milk or coffee on arrival after long drive. Although this is optional it does make a nice welcome. Bedding creased but clean. Beds uncomfortable but rest of furniture comfy. There was very little information on display as to how things work etc...outside lights wouldn't work so we contacted owner who told us to go outside and empty any water out of light fittings (very disappointed in this) lights still didn't work and trip switch constantly flicked off throughout our stay. Extremely dark outside so lighting would have made a difference. Not a lot of thought gone onto outside area for winter months. Very muddy and sludgy which dogs kept carrying back into the house (especially at night as we couldn't see where they had gone) We must have mopped up twice a day everyday we were there. Barnard Castle is lovely so is Beamish.... which was the highlight of the visit.
