Excellent. Ticked every box. I don't normally make time to post reviews but feel compelled to highly recommend this place. I am also very grateful for the time taken by other people who gave their positive reviews, which I agree with wholeheartedly. Moreover, I was not surprised to see that their 'Guest Book' had been filled with lovely comments from other families - we had a fabulous time!
We were given a warm welcome by the owners, whom we found to be genuinely friendly and very helpful. Grant and Nicola were also very respectful and completely unobtrusive, plus we had absolutely no issue with the deposit. Indeed, what with 4 'lively' kids with us, it's quite a feat to NOT inflict some damage - which did happen - but Grant & Nicola were totally cool and more than reasonable about it.
As for the place itself...quality! Very clean, modern and spacious enough for 2 families, with inspirational views all around. Plenty of kids games for rainy days and even a Sky package! The Wi-Fi was generally great throughout the week, especially considering the location, with photos being constantly uploaded and shared.
As for the overall location, I couldn't recommend this highly enough as "an easy" stay for families, as it has everything that's great about England: nearby parks, beautiful nature walks and woodlands, steam trains and museums, safari & leisure park, farms, etc. The necessary supermarkets are less than 10 minutes away and do online deliveries. Planning our days was made even easier as Grant & Nicola had a very organised collection of leaflets re: the local attractions.
All in all, everything we wished for and more! Iceberg-Slim 2017-08-14
Horrible - stay away if you value you your time, sanity or money. The house is spacious and was very clean. Sadly the positives end there.
The owners are aggressive and rude. The house was freezing on arrival and they charge ?5 for a basket of logs.
On our first evening the host got drunk and came round to shout, swear and threaten us for having shopping delivered. We we're told off for using the central heating (it was December) and for leaving the kitchen light on (we were cooking).
Grant, the owner seemed to take great offence at us staying in his property and repeatedly argued, shouted and blamed us for ridiculous things.
He told us that a previous guest had been attacked by his dog resulting in the dog being put down. He then proceeded to repeatedly blame us for killing his dog...
Apparently having guests who treat this rental holiday cottage like a 'holiday home' is just too much and he won't have guests anymore. Therefore it is our fault that his children won't go to university. Makes perfect sense. He was really angry about people treating it like a holiday home so if you do decide to stay make sure you don't do that...
We were constantly worried that Grant or his wife were coming in to the house when we were out and his wife repeatedly questioned us about burning pans as she had smelt it through the door - we didn't burn anything but I was concerned she was sniffing at our door.
When we went to check out Grant found a tiny burn mark on the carpet and blamed us for it. It definitely wasn't us but they withheld our ?200 deposit as apparently they will need to replace the whole carpet. Again Grant was rude and aggressive, shouting and swearing at us. He went on an obsessive rant about how we could have burnt his whole house down and "how would we feel if he had come to our house and burnt it down".
At know point was Grant open to having a reasonable conversation or trying to be a good host. To be honest I'm baffled as to why he even rents the property out.
We did make a complaint to the agency we let through and received compensation. Lenolie 2017-05-15
The owner is aggressive and refused to give us any of our ?200 refund back. This couple should definitely not be in the holiday letting business.
When we first arrived at the accommodation we were summoned to be informed of all the rules. The house is lovely and the views are gorgeous too but i wouldn't recommend this as a relaxing holiday, we spent the last 24 hours cleaning as we had been made well aware of the consequences. Grant accused us of leaving lights on around the house, when I explained there was 11 of us (6 adults and 5 children) and many different activities going on at one time in various rooms he informed me that he knew this was not the case. He essentially made me feel like he has the ability to see who is in which room and what they are doing... I found his comments weird and a tad scary. His attitude spoilt the holiday upset many of us.
I would also like to point out that there was not enough cutlery for all guests to eat at once, luckily we had a picnic hamper with extra for the kids to use. Lickleleah 2016-08-05
Shatterford Escape To The Country Had a lovely weeks holiday with Family here. Beautiful location in lovely setting. Grant the owner was extremely helpful with anything we needed help with and couldn't do enough for us. House was well presented and clean. Couldn't really fault anything although the WiFi signal could do with boosting. Great base for exploring the local area. Would thoroughly recommend this property to anyone and would stay here again.
