Cleanliness poor & attitude even worse!
We booked Potter's Cottage (attached to Beechmount B&B) 3rd - 10th Septmber 2016 Within an hour of arriving I found myself having to clean the fridge before I could put our food in it. I took pics as proof for the owners that it needed cleaning. After cleaning & stocking the fridge I decided to check other areas. The oven contained a dirty grill pan with food remains still in it. Food stains were also on the inside of the oven window. The kitchen cupboard door fronts & handles were food stained & sticky. I then decided to check the toilet & was again disappointed to find that unclean too - a build up black mould. Gary & Denise (owners) returned around half an hour after our arrival. I decided the cleanliness needed mentioning. I had toyed with the idea of doing the British thing & not complaining & just cleaning it by myself but I couldn't find many cleaning materials, besides I reasoned that I hadn't come on holiday to clean the accommodation! I quickly began to regret making this legitimate complaint as Denise's attitude was shocking. I was calm & polite but Denise said "she was now uncomfortable with us staying there". Denise was uncomfortable with the photos of the dirty appliances etc. How else could I prove they were unclean after I had cleaned one of them? Denise offered to find us somewhere else to stay nearby. I suggested a simpler option would be for us to pop out for an hour or two whilst the place was cleaned up. Denise stated again her discomfort at having us stay there. Denise then attempted to wipe away the black mould on the toilet using toilet paper! At this point Gary joined the conversation. He handled the complaint in a business like & professional manner initially. He acknowledged that the level of grime & his wife's attitude were unacceptable. He offered to set about cleaning it but by this time myself & my husband were disinclined to stay there. Gary returned our ?50 deposit & obviously the balance due was waived. Gary apologised profusely & explained that his wife is "not normally like this". We left an hour & a half after arriving. Wifi had also been removed from our cottage the day before we arrived as Chinese visitors require it. Please see other Trip Advisor Review for Beechmount Country House B & B for photos of dirty loo, grill pan & fridge in Potter's Cottage. In conclusion: Not worth its 5 star rating! I think the owners will up their game in future but if you do stay there & you have a legitimate cause for complaint - speak to Gary not Denise. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g186325-d666436-r414961950-Beechmount_Country_House-Hawkshead_Ambleside_Lake_District_Cumbria_England.html#
