Charming little cottage
A charming little cottage located on a quiet lane, very well appointed (although a DVD player would be handy), kitchen was compact and bijou but had everything you needed. The only downside was the garden. We took our dog, and wrongly presumed we'd open a door and let the dog out when needed. To reach the garden you go out the front door, walked to the end of the terrace, through a gate and a 2nd gate. We managed for the weekend but would not have been great for a longer stay. Having said that, the garden looked a nice area to sit out in, we just didn't have the weather or time!

Just great!
Holly cottage. Lovely. Ulta clean. Comfortable and cosy. Would benefit from a handrail on the stairs as my elderly mum found it quite difficult getting upstairs and down. Couldn't find the bathroom light??? Also, the bathroom door , bit of a hazard opening out onto small landing. But all said and done, a lovely base and close to some nice places to have a drink and a meal. The summer wine tour was very informative, well worth the money.

Lovely little cottage
Holly Cottage is located in the village of Holmfirth on the north-east edge of the Peak District. Outside the cottage there was room to park one vehicle. Then some steps straight from the country lane into the kitchen. This led into the living room which had a settee, dining table, two dining chairs and two folding chairs. Also a decent television and a gas fire (which we didn't use). There was a door to a small cellar which we ventured into once. There was a freezer down there which was switched off, but was clean so I assume we could have used it. There was also room to store a few items if required (bikes perhaps?). Our party comprised of two adults and an older teenager plus a small dog. So we closed the cellar door and setup the dog bed in front of it! Upstairs there was a double room, single room and bathroom. The kitchen and bathroom were both 'compact and bijou'. If you're XXL you'd have problems. The stairs were carpeted but were uneven in height which caused one of us to have a stubbed toe! A handrail would have been helpful. There is central heating in the cottage and also wi-fi. The kitchen was very well equipped and it was obvious that some of the items were new. The whole cottage was well maintained and clean, although there was a slight damp smell when first entering (merely one of the issues of an old cottage but did not impinge our enjoyment of it). Towels and bed linen were provided and the beds were comfortable. We were very lucky to experience beautiful warm weather so found the throws provided very useful instead of using the fabulous high tog duvets. There is a washing machine and we did (sadly!) have to do a load of washing. There was no clothes horse/airer in the house or outside, and no tumble dryer. We used clothes hangers and hung the laundry from hooks on the beams in the living room. It did occur to us that had we experienced wet weather it would have been inconvenient trying to clean and dry walking clothes. Outside there was a small garden area which was accessed by going out the front door, down to the end of the terrace , through an access gate and then in through another small gate. It could do with a bit of tlc. The village has two pubs, a small shop, a church and a tea room. The shop was useful, and we went to the Bridge Inn twice to eat. Very good food and we were allowed to take the dog. We also noticed a good bus service going through the village, even the H5 (small mini bus vehicles) service going by the cottage. As one would expect of the Peak District, there are some beautiful walks, directly from the cottage and we had a truly lovely day walking round the nearby reservoirs. Just down the road is the small town of Holmfirth and we spent a morning following their Blue Plaque tour and their Last of the Summer Wine tour . We also had the good fortune to bump into a local historian who had helped put the blue plaque tour together. We found really nice local bakers and butchers shops and a cheese shop too. Another local stop we enjoyed was near Jackson Bridge; the Oil Can Cafe. Worth a visit if you like a nice tea and old cars.
