St. Mary the Virgin, Lower Gavenhurst

Unlike most English parish churches, St. Mary the Virgin's origins can be precisely dated and attributed. Robert de Bilhemore (d. 1360) provided the funds for building the church, and a brass tablet near the altar comemmorates his gift.

The church, now in the care of the Redundant Churches Fund, is small, and largely free of well-intentioned Victorian restoration. Most of the original Decorated period work survives unaltered. The screen is late 14th century, though the benches and altar are later medieval.
