Lostwithiel Heritage Snapshot
Would you have a horse for a king? Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, thought it would be a bit of fun to try. Devereux led a Parliamentary army into Cornwall in the summer of 1643. His troops occupied Lostwithiel, and the legend persists that Essex and his men brought a horse to the font of St Bartholomew's church and christened it 'Charles'. Unfortunately the fun stopped there for the Parliamentarians, and Essex and his men were soundly beaten in battle by King Charles and his Royalist troops.
