Keswick Heritage Snapshot
Keswick has been associated with pencil making for almost 500 years. Back in the mid 16th century the first deposits of graphite were found in nearby Borrowdale, and the two centuries that followed a local cottage industry grew up, turning the graphite into pencils. In the Victorian period pencil factories were built in and around Keswick, and even today there is an active pencil industry in the area. Local History
