Accommodation - heritage rated
We love British heritage and history. If your idea of fine accommodation is an
historic medieval coaching inn or an elegant country house hotel, you'll like
our new Heritage Rating system for accommodation. We've poured over thousands

more than just a room - they offer a taste of history! If you love British

Historic accommodation properties, those rated highly on a Heritage Rating, are also highlighted
in yellow and listed first. Learn more
about Heritage Ratings for historic properties.
Bed and breakfasts are frequently owner-operated, and generally
offer a more personal level of service than you might find by
staying in a larger hotel. In many cases you will be a guest
in the owner's private home.
Ravenglass Heritage Snapshot
The Romans founded a fort at Ravenglass about the year 79AD as a supply port for their conquest of northern Britain. Of that fort only the ruins of a later 2nd century bathhouse remain. The Romans used Ravenglass to land troops and supplies, with roads running inland up Eskdale to another fort at Hardknott Pass, and beyond towards Ambleside.
