Cleator Heritage Snapshot
The parish church of St Leonard dates to at least the 12th century. It is possible that the church was built upon the remains of much older Norse building. The population of Cleator and nearby Cleator Moor rose dramatically in the mid 19th century as a result of immigration of large numbers of Irish fleeing the terrible famine in that country.
