Author Arthur Ransome drew much of the inspiration for his popular book 'Swallows and Amazons' from his trips to Coniston Water while he was growing up. The steam yacht Gondola, which now carries visitors on sightseeing trips up and down the lake, was Ransome's inspiration for Captain Flint's houseboat in the book.
