Learn more about Heritage Ratings for historic hotels. Grasmere Heritage Snapshot The village of Grasmere is one of only five in Cumbria which still carries out an annual rushbearing ceremony. Local children carry fresh green rushes in the shape of a cross through the village to St Oswald's church. Each child is also given a morsel of Grasmere gingerbread. The rushbearing ceremony dates back to the days when churches had floors of packed earth, and fresh rushes were brought to the church to be strewn upon the floor, providing a fresh smell and rudimentary insulation. At Grasmere the ceremony usually takes place in early August.
