Shap Heritage Snapshot
The parish church of St Michael's in Shap dates back to the mid 8th century, though the present building was erected in about 1120. In 1199 the Premonstratensian abbey at Preston Patrick was relocated to Shap, and canons of the abbey served as rectors of the parish church. The local inhabitants may have found the tithes and rents due to the abbey onerous, for there are records of the locals breaking into the abbey.
