St Bees Heritage Snapshot
St Bees is named for Bega, a 9th century Irish princess who fled here to escape an enforced marriage. A Benedictine priory was established at St Bees in the 12th century, and the priory church has been beautifully restored. One of the oldest and most intriguing bits of the church is the 'Beowulf Stone', a pre-Conquest carved lintel showing St Michael slaying a dragon.
