It was built by The Duke of Bedford in 1857 to his own design as part of a model farm, and it was sold in 1988 and converted to a high standard. In 1996, an adjoining property was property was purchased to give the hotel a total of 12 bedrooms, two of which have four posters with superb views across the valley to Dartmoor The restaurant which has 40 covers overlooks the small walled garden and is open every night.
