This area has recently been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. Within easy reach are reminders of the areas industrial heritage at Kilhope Lead Mine and Beamish Museum, reminders of religious heritage at the local chapel, where John Wesley preached, and at nearby Durham Cathedral and natural heritage at Burnhope Moor and the Pennine Way

Within the hour you can also explore Northumbria, the lakes, Yorkshire Dales and moors and the Tees coast. For the more adventurous, bicycles are available at Stanhope Visitor Centre and The rookhope Inn. There are many local walks including the Pennine Way, and pony trekking can be found
