Usher Gallery, LincolnJames Usher (1845-1921) was a successful Lincoln jeweler who made a large part of his fortune selling replicas of the Lincoln Imp (see our article on Lincoln Cathedral) to Victorian tourists. Usher was an avid collector, and over his lifetime he amassed a huge collection of artefacts ranging from ceramics to watches, artwork to historic clocks. On his death at the age of 76, Usher bequeathed his collection to the city of Lincoln, along with funds to build a suitable gallery and museum. The Usher Gallery is the result of Usher's gift. In addition to the artefacts donated by Usher, the museum features galleries of paintings by local artists. The Usher Gallery is located directly opposite to The Collection: Art and Archaeology in Linconshire, and both are signposted from the main tourist area of the city, a matter of a few minutes walk. In the grounds of the Usher Gallery is a Roman moat, and the gallery grounds merge with the Temple Gardens, where a section of the old Roman city wall can be seen.
