A secret gem, Pakenham Water Mill is located only seven miles from Bury St Edmunds, yet is tucked away in a quiet rural setting by Pakenham Fen. The mill is the last working water mill in Suffolk, indeed, the village of Pakenham is unique in that it has both a working water mill and a working windmill.

Pakenham Windmill is a 5-storey tower mill driven by 4 patent sails, built in 1830. Owned by the Bryant family continuously since 1880, the mill was in operation until the 1970s. It has since been restored to full working order and is open daily during working hours.

By the large village green in Saxtead Green stands a historic post mill built in 1860 on the site of a mill that existed here as early as 1287. The mill continued grinding corn until the Second World War when it was converted to grind grain for animal feed. It ceased operation in 1947 and was restored a decade later.

Snape Maltings began as a mid-19th-century complex of industrial buildings used for malting grain. The Grade-II listed buildings were later converted into shops and apartments, and, most famously, the centrepiece concert hall for the annual Aldeburgh Festival. The Maltings is set in a superb conservation area with walks, cycling trails, and boat trips along the River Alde.

Thorpeness Windmill was built as a corn mill in 1824, in Aldringham, then disassembled in 1922 and moved to Thorpeness to pump water from a well into storage tanks in the water tower that became known as The House in the Clouds. It passed out of use in 1960.

Wolsey's Gate is a ceremonial gateway created for a school founded by Thomas, Cardinal Wolsey in his home town of Ipswich in 1528. The gateway led directly to the River Orwell. The school was left incomplete when Wolsey fell from power, and the gateway is all that remains.
