Photos of Edington

The former priory church of the Bonshommes order, built between 1352-61. A superb example of the transition between Decorated Gothic and Perpendicular style, Edington features some wonderful medieval and Jacobean memorials, including the painted Baynton memorial.

The magnificent three story south porch. The cross is medieval, restored in the Victorian period.

The church is set in a wonderfully peaceful churchyard, on the slopes of the chalk down of Salisbury Plain. Here is the view from the east.

Edington church, medieval tomb
At the west end of the south aisle are several excellent medieval monuments of knights, brought here from Imber church in 1952 when that village was evacuated to make way for military occupation.

Effigy of a medieval knight. This also was brought to Edington from Imber church.

The plasterwork ceiling of the nave, in imitation of medieval vaulting. The ceiling dates to 1663.

The font. The octagonal base is 14th century Decorated Gothic, surmounted by a Victorian cover.
Cheney monument, Edington church, Wiltshire
Cheney memorial, south aisle. This 15th century monument may originally have been a chantry chapel. The Purbeck marble top has inset spaces for memorial brasses.
