St Denys Hotel was originally the rectory of the ancient parish church of St Denys and has religious associations dating from Roman times. The first Christian church was probably built on the current site before the Norman conquest A Church of St Denys certainly existed there by 1154 and parts of this Norman church can still be seen in the present building which also contains one of the finest collections of medieval stained glass in York.
