Berkeley Castle photo, Berkeley Castle

The first castle here on the east shore of the Severn dates to the Saxon period, but the current Berkeley Castle was begun in 1153. It is most famous as the site of Edward II's imprisonment and brutal murder in 1327. There are wonderful terraced gardens below the main castle buildings.
