Appleby Castle photo, Appleby Castle

Appleby Castle stands at the upper end of the attractive High Street in Appleby-in-Westmorland. The castle was begun around 1100 and the stone keep rebuilt in stone in 1170. As with so many Cumbrian castles, Appleby was rebuilt by Lady Anne Clifford in the 17th century. It is not normally open to the public.
