King's School was formally established by Henry VIII in 1541, but the school itself goes back much further, probably to a school begun by St Augustine in the late 6th or early 7th century. Thus King's School can fairly claim to be the oldest school in Britain. Many of the main buildings are set about Green Court, within the cathedral precinct.
