On leaving the cathedral by the north aisle exit, you come to a fascinating bit of archaeological excavation. Here, within a few feet, investigators have exposed several thousand years of history. At the far left end of this image is a section of Roman pavement. Beside the pavement is a 12th or 13th century stone casket.
