The inverted horseshoe symbol is set into the Georgian gateway to Oakham Castle. The symbol is used on the coat of arms of the de Ferrers family, lords of the manor for centuries. Within the castle is a huge collection of ceremonial horseshoes, all hung upside down, like this one.
