Norman arch, Prestbury, Cheshire

Prestbury is a small town on the River Bollin just north of Macclesfield, Cheshire. In the graveyard of the medieval parish church stands a small Norman chapel, a remnant of the first church on this site. The west door of the chapel is magnificently carved with traditional Norman motifs. Near the chapel is a much older cross, perhaps late Saxon.

Selby effigy, Ightham, Kent

Most people come to the village of Ightham, Kent, to see the marvelous moated manor house of Ightham Mote. How many stop to enjoy Ightham's parish church, I wonder? The church of St Peter is a treasure house of historic monuments, primarily to the Selby family of Ightham Mote, like the Jacobean recumbent effigy seen here. The oldest monument, however, is that of Sir Thomas Cawne, who built Ightham Mote and died around 1374.

Kirby Grindalythe mosaic

The village of Kirby Grindalythe sits in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds, just north of Sledmere. The Victorian parish church of St Andrews features fabulous mosaics that cover the entire west wall from floor to ceiling. The mosaics date to 1893 and are designed to resemble a mural. The effect is quite staggering and well worth a trip to see.

Green Man misericord

Wintringham is a small hamlet in North Yorkshire, east of Malton. The redundant parish church of St Peters features a Norman chancel, built of local sandstone. Within the church are wall paintings and a series of marvellous medieval misericords, including this one, carved in the image of a Green Man - the ancient symbol of fertility.

Shrewsbury Abbey interior

Shrewsbury Abbey is familiar to readers of Ellis Peter's popular 'Brother Cadfael' mystery novels, and indeed, many of the locations described in the novels can easily be spotted in the abbey church and nearby. There is much more to the Abbey than a fictional detective, however! The interior is a mix of superb medieval architecture and later remodeling, and historic tombs line both sides of the imposing nave pictured here.
