Solway Coastal Drive
From Dumfries take the A 710 to Dalbeattie. This road goes through countryside with picturesque villages, sandy bays and rocky coves. Views across Solway Firth. Dumfries and Galloway

St. Abb's HeadSt. Abb's Head
Off the A1107, 2 miles (3km) north of Coldingham, Borders. Tel. (0) 18907 71443. National Trust for Scotland.
300ft high cliffs that are home to colonies of birds that nest on the ledges from April to August. A National Nature Reserve. Borders

StaffaStaffa
Uninhabited island 7 miles (11.3km) west of Mull, Strathclyde. Can be viewed from Iona. National Trust for Scotland.

Tay Forest Park, Loch Tummel, Loch Rannoch and Rannoch Moor
On the B8019, B846 and unclassified road.
Forestry Visitor Centre. The Queen's View (named after Queen Victoria) viewpoint looks up Loch Tummel. Rannoch Moor, at the end of the road, is desolate wilderness covered with peat bogs. Tayside

The Trossachs
On A821/B829 and extending to the shore of Loch Lomond on the B837 and unclassified road.
Considered a beauty spot-Loch Achray and Loch Katrine (no vehicle access, but there is a boat trip) are part of the area. Queen Elizabeth Forest Park has 32,000 acres (12,950ha) of plantations. Forestry Visitor Centre. Archray Forest Drive has parking and viewpoints. Walking trails. Narrow roads get busy-go early. Fife and Central

Thurso Drive
A836/A838 coastal drive.
74 miles (119km) of moorlands, sandy bays, lochs and headlands. Highland and Islands

Torridon
North of the A896, 9 miles (14.5km) southwest of Kinlochewe. Tel. (0) 1445 791 368. National Trust for Scotland.
16100 acre (6515ha) estate, mountain scenery. Interpretive display and AV presentation at junction of A896 and Diabaig road. Deer Museum is 600 yards (548.6m) down gravel road leading to The Mains. Highland and Islands

Trotternish Peninsula
On the Isle of Skye-A855, A87.
Twenty mile (32km) peninsula coastal drive. Unusual rock formations (The Storr, basaltic rock columns and towers), cliff formations and seascapes. Highland and Islands

Unst
Estate at northern tip of Shetland. Reached by ferry from Lerwick and car or by plane. National Trust for Scotland.
Undulating hills, low rocky coastline, beaches and cliffs. Of botanical, geological and ornithological importance. Shetland
