John Lennon's Childhood Home Opens to the Public
John Lennon's childhood Liverpool home - Mendips - opens to the public for the first time on Saturday 29 March 2003. Visitors will be able to enjoy a joint tour of Mendips and the former Liverpool family home of Sir Paul and his brother Michael McCartney, 20, Forthlin Road. The house was donated to the National Trust by Yoko Ono Lennon. Her wish was that Mendips should be preserved very much as it was when John lived there, presenting the early experiences that helped inspire his musical genius.
Lennon lived at Mendips with his Aunt Mimi from the ages of 5 to 23, when he left home. The house has been restored as closely as possible to how it looked when he lived there as a child, teenager and young man in the 1950s and 1960s. Lennon often practised the guitar out on the front porch, and it was there that he composed and rehearsed many songs.
Joint tours of Mendips and the McCartney home run 29 March to 26 October from Wednesday to Sunday. Access to the houses is by minibus tour only and these leave from the Albert Dock and Speke Hall. Ticket prices are adults £10, National Trust members £5, and children are free when accompanied by an adult. For more information or to pre-book for the morning tours call 0151 708 8574, and for afternoon tours call 0151 427 7231.
