11/14/2003 Entry: "Shropshire Union Canal Walk"
Exploring the Shropshire Union Canal
On 29 November 2003, you have a chance to get outside and enjoy a relaxing walk along one of England's most historic canals, the Shropshire Union. This wonderful walk from Beeston to Nantwich will take in some interesting sections of the canal, with a variety of locks, junctions and boatyards.

The group of walkers will meet at Nantwich Basin at 10:00am to go by car to Beeston where the walk will commence. If you arrive early, you can have breakfast in the cafe or have a look around around the well stocked chandlery.

A lunch break will be had in the Barbridge area where the Jolly Tar and Barbridge Inn provide cask beers and food.

Stout shoes / boots and waterproofs are advised.

About the Canal
Once part of a grand system of country waterways, today's 'Shroppie' runs for 66 miles between Wolverhampton and Ellesmere Port. Arrow-straight for much of its length, this charming rural waterway strides across the landscape.

The canal from Nantwich to Wolverhampton was built with long embankments, deep cuttings and grandiose bridges that frequently dominate the scenery. In contrast to the winding contours of early canals, the Shroppie kept the same course across valley and through hills, speeding cargoes on their way from the North-West to the Midlands. Concrete 'pill boxes' are an artefact from later times, a reminder of how the line was defended in wartime.
