03/19/2004 Entry: "Newtown Textile Museum" New Textile Museum in Wales A typical example of an early 19th century Welsh weaving shop, with accommodation below and handlooms above, opens on May 1 as the Newtown Textile Museum. The building, in Commercial Street, comprises six back-to-back cottages, each home to a family on the ground and first floors, with two large rooms with looms on the second and third floors. A textile museum was originally created in the upper floors in the 1960s, but the building has now been extensively refurbished and restored to include the whole structure. It will give a comprehensive picture of living and working conditions for the early 19th century workers, and describes the development of the manufacture of woollen flannel in Newtown.
On the River Severn, 175 miles north-west of London, Newtown was the birthplace of the philanthropist Robert Owen (1771-1858), and is a good centre for exploring Mid Wales.
