07/25/2004 Entry: "Ham House, London, offers Ghost Tours"
Haunted Historic House focus of Ghost Club Investigation Visitors to reputedly haunted Ham House, in Richmond, London, can check for themselves whether there is any unearthly ‘presence’ on regular family-orientated ghost tours (August 2, 9, 16, 23 and October 18 and 19). There will also be an evening Halloween tour (Oct. 31) – for adults only.
Work has started on a detailed investigation into paranormal activity at the 17th century house. The Ghost Club – established in 1862 and the world’s oldest organisation of its kind -- has selected the Thames-side mansion as the focus for its year-long investigation because of the frequency and intensity of strange phenomena recorded there.
Many of the alleged sightings are said to be those of the Duchess of Lauderdale, the house’s 17th century mistress. Spectral versions of her King Charles spaniel, whose bones have been found, and a chaplain, also feature in accounts.
Booking is advised, tel. 020 8940 1950.
Ham House and its formal garden, run by the National Trust, are open Saturday – Wednesday until Oct. 31 (admission £7).
