Explore the Hidden Thames
The beauty of the upper reaches of the River Thames is often overlooked in favour of the busier central London stretches but a new company is offering visitors a chance to explore this hidden treasure. Great River Journeys is based in Wallingford in Oxfordshire – 50 miles west of London – and its modern boats explore the river from the historic university city of Oxford to King Henry VIII’s Hampton Court Palace and further towards London.

Daily public sailings (until October) from Wallingford take passengers to Goring (from £4.40) or to the regatta town of Henley (from £12).

Private hire is also available allowing guests to go farther afield and visit places of interest along the way, such as Didcot Railway Centre, Dorchester Abbey or Windsor Castle. A variety of options including catering and evening cruises are available for those wishing to unwind and enjoy the slower pace of river life while enjoying scenery that has inspired writers and artists.

The company has recently acquired a 100 year-old restored Edwardian steamship, Streatley.
