St Pauls Cathedral - Diocese of London celebrates 1400th Anniversary
St Paul's Cathedral in London is celebrating the 1400 anniversary of the diocese of London with a year-long series of events, including a special pilgrimage to Canterbury and an exhibition of treasure from London churches.

Tower of London recreates the Coronation of James I
From February 16-20 visitors to the Tower of London cab join in as costumed guides re-create the royal pomp and pageantry of the celebrations as the first Stuart monarch, James VI of Scotland and I of England, arrives at the Tower of London to celebrate his Coronation, as had been royal tradition for centuries.

Hats and Handbags at Kensington Palace
More than seventy items of headwear belonging to the Queen are on display at Kensington Palace, London, in an exhibition entitled "Hats and Handbags". The exhibition features items associated with significant moments in Queen Elizabeth's life and reign, beginning with a headdress worn by her as a Princess and ending with the hat worn for the Golden Jubilee service in 2002. Also on display is a selection of handbags chosen to complement her outfits.

Beer Quarry Cave guided tour
The underground quarry at Beer, near Seaton, Devon, first worked by the Romans, has since supplied stone for 24 cathedrals including Exeter, parts of Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Hampton Court and Windsor Castle. Conducted tours of the quarry caves are now available, led by trained guides, and give the visitor an hour long tour of this vast man-made complex of underground caverns created by centuries of quarrying the famous Beer stone.

York Event Guide
The York Tourism Bureau has launched a new website featuring events in the historic city. Whats On York, which debuted this month, lets both visitors and residents of York search for current and upcoming events in York and the surrounding areas.

Highwayman at the London Metropolitan Archives
Meet a mysterious Highwayman in a lively and entertaining show at London's Metropolitan Archives. This Family Fun learning day takes place Saturday 14th February at the LMA. Experience drama, storytelling and poetry as you explore the world of an 18th century highwayman.

Events Calendar for York 2004
The historic city of York will be host to a variety of major events during the coming year. Details of events for 2004 have been released by the York Tourism Board, and visitors can now plan to enjoy such diverse entertainment as early music, York's Viking and Roman heritage, and largest UK Festival of Food and Drink among others.

National Garden Scheme February 2004 Openings
The arrival of hellebores and snowdrops heralds the start of garden visiting in February 2004 for the National Gardens Scheme, when gardens up and down England and Wales reveal their early colour. The NGS has released details of gardens open for charity in February, among which is Lacock Abbey, famous as the setting for numerous films, including Pride and Prejudice.

National Railway Museum in York
In a commemoration of two centuries of railway art, the National Railway Museum (NRM) is opening a new exhibition called Along Artistic Lines, timed to coincide with the bicentennary of rail travel.

Free Southwest England Walking Guide
South West Tourism, the official tourism body for England's Southwest region, offers a new Walking Guide with advice on walking routes across the region, from Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, through Wiltshire, Bristol and Bath, Somerset, Dorset and Devon, to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The Guide also lists a selection of B&Bs, hotels and self-catering accommodation that welcome walkers, many of which will accommodate dogs.

St Paul's Cathedral Renovations Underway
The great West Front of St. Paul's Cathedral has disappeared. Well, not exactly. It has been hidden by one of the largest printed images ever seen in London, while cleaning and repair work goes on behind it. The image - taken from a 1927 architectural drawing of the West Front - is printed on PVC designed to withstand sun, wind and rain, and is 57 metres wide by 30 metres high.

Landmark Trust offers Holidays in Historic Buildings
The Landmark Trust, a preservation charity which rescues and restores architecturally interesting and historic buildings at risk, and then gives them a new lease of life as self-catering holiday homes, has 178 properties in the 20th edition of its handbook.
