Lovely views and location spoiled by condition of property and lack of bike storage
What should have been a lovely holiday was spoilt by a misleading listing and lack of property maintenance. The listing states that there is bike storage. There was no bike storage. The owner told us that the last but one occupant had lost the key, and in any case it was full of his gardening tools anyway. Since we had chosen this property because it was one of the few that offered bike storage, we were pretty annoyed. The owner suggested we cover the bike with a tarpaulin. Any serious cyclist knows that that won't be happening!! The property needs some maintenance. At first view it looks lovely, but then you notice that there is a gaping section of plaster board on lounge ceiling, several window frames need painting, the expelair in the ensuite bathroom is missing. The master bedroom bed has a worn out mattress. You feel like you are going to roll out of bed! When we took the bedding off at the end of the week as requested, we found 2 of the pillows were horribly stained and the quilt was ripped. The kitchen has a large cooker but only 3 pans. These are in mediocre condition and in my opinion need replaced. The rooms are spacious, the TV works fine, the cottage is peaceful and quiet. Local walks are great. The views are fab. The pub at Carlton is great with fab staff and lovely food. The owner returned my good housekeeping bond after 10 days, once I had reminded him, by bank transfer. The owner promises a basketful of logs as a starter pack for the 2 fires. There were just 2 single logs and firelighters left for us. After the holiday, I emailed the owner direct to give him feedback, and suggest that he might want to give us an apology and a part refund, as he had not provided the facilities that the listing promised. He ignored my email. I contacted Sykes to complain and they have given me an apology and a voucher. This cottage could be lovely if it was maintained properly. As it is, we will not return. We will return to the Dale as it is beautiful, and stay in another cottage. I really hope that the owner has listened to my feedback so that future holidaymakers have a better time.

Disappointed aboud what the SYKES-site promissed and the reality !!!
The holiday started difficult! Very difficult owner with his own system of "good household bond" ! He is very unfriendly and stubborn! We took the ? 150 good household bond in cash with us to avoid extra bankcosts! No Mr Sardo needed a banktransfer!! So with a lot of trouble we managed to make the transfer ! Realy, I think he doesn't like non British people! People be warned: you have to make a banktransfer 2 weeks in advance to his account, but he takes the privilige to send you a UK cheque back afterwards, also if you're living abroud!! (large cost to cash the cheque) instead of paying it back by banktransfer !! The cottage was not at all as shown on the pictures on the SYKES website !! Entrance of garden: junkyard at the side of the house, garden furniture rotten, windows need urgently some paint, lot of rubbish in the open woodshed near the kichen entrance ! Inside: kitchen cupboards not clean inside, not one decent pot or pan present, cooking range with 4 induction plates, no decent suitable pot or pan for induction (??) , sealing in diningarea is broken and hanging down, several cushions in seats are dirty, ironing device is sticked together with ducktape (dangerous), lightdimmer in first lounge not working properly. Bedrooms: cussions inside durty and very smelly (euach), duvet of masterbedroom wornout with big holes in it (you only find it out when you're leaving by taking off the covers ) When Mr Sardo, the owner is so keen on punctuality about the payment of his household bond, he'd better be as keen on the state of his property before letting people in!! The only thing that reallly was very good was the view over the dales (luckyly that's not depending on the owner!!) In our more than 30 years coming to the UK , this was our worst experience !! People who don't trust customers by charging them by their own system of household bond seem to be not trustworthy themselves!! We'll never choose for a cottage with such a system of bond anymore!! We can't understand that SYKES doesn't react to our mails with our complaints!!! So far, signed H.Brughmans

A wonderfully rural setting with stunning views of the hills behind. The property was very clean, well equipped and comfortable. Wonderful to be able to make up a real fire of an evening. If you want peace, quiet and remoteness with walks straight from the door this place is for you.
