Situated at the highest point in Hampshire, in the heart of the countryside, the Trooper combines a traditional pub with locally sourced homecooked dining and comfortable bed & breakfast accommodation. Each of our eight en suite rooms has its own individual character - they are named after a local village or landmark, and feature pictures by local photographer Jon Furley.
In the mid 90's the Trooper faced closure and conversion to a housing development, but was rescued from this fate by the wholehearted opposition of the villagers, who objected to losing their local watering hole. It was at this time that the present owners took over and embarked on the regeneration of this wonderful pub. In the years since, the Trooper has built an enviable reputation for the quality of its food and drink, as well as for the excellent level of service and welcoming atmosphere.
The hotel is open all year round (with a slightly reduced service on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day). The restaurant & bar is open from Monday evening until Sunday lunch (closed Sunday evening & Monday lunch). Each room boasts a full range of facilities, including en suite, coffee & tea making facilities, Freeview TV, free Wifi access, direct dial phone, hairdryer and trouser press.
The Trooper makes an excellent base for a relaxing and enjoyable break. We back onto the stunning Ashford Hangers nature reserve, and are well positioned for the South Downs, Jane Austen's Chawton and Gilbert White's Selborne. The charming market town of Petersfield lies just a few minutes away with London approximately one hour by train from Petersfield.
