A few steps from Dane John Mound are the old city walls and one of the medieval defensive towers, known as Whitecross Tower. Whitecross Tower takes its name from the white cross formed in the stone of the exterior tower face. This cross commemorates the death of Protestants who were burned at the stake between 1554-57 in nearby Martyrs Field.
