Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve, Wester Ross

The Story Behind the Image - Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve

The Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve in Wester Ross was the very first nature reserve in Britain. The easiest place to access the reserve is from the visitor parking area at Coille na Glas Leitire near Kinlochewe, on the shore of Loch Maree.

I came here on a lovely autumn afternoon as part of two amazing weeks photographing the scenery of Wester Ross. I parked at the visitor centre and took the signposted circular walk into the reserve.

My goodness, the first section of the trail was steep! By the time I reached the upland plateau at the top of the steep section I was flagging badly, but as soon as the path levelled out I started to enjoy some of the most incredible scenery that Scotland has to offer - and that is really saying something.

The views were simply stunning. I could have chosen any one of a dozen photos to share, but I chose this one of a meandering stream running through golden-brown heather with a backdrop of rugged peaks. This is so typical of Wester Ross - and so utterly compelling.
