Sandwood Bay, Sutherland

The Story Behind the Image - Sandwood Bay, Sutherland

Sandwood Bay is a secluded stretch of pristine beach near Cape Wrath, in the extreme north-west corner of Scotland. This is one of the most isolated - and one of the most beautiful - beaches in Britain, an expanse of virgin white sand scarcely touched by the outside world.

Sandwood Bay can only be reached by a five-mile walk from a parking area near Blairmore, west of Kinlochbervie. The beach is part of an estate owned by the John Muir Trust, who help preserve its unique and precious environment from the effects of visitors.

If you do make the trek to Sandwood Bay you will be rewarded by one of the most incredible landscapes in Britain.

I took this photo on a beautiful sunny morning in autumn. I was the first person to reach the beach that day, but the sheer length of the walk meant that it was well past 9 am by the time I made it to Sandwood Bay. I took this photo looking south-west towards a sea stack at the far end of Sandwood Bay.
