OUR VIEW
Mayfair is practically a byword for elegance and aristocratic charm. The area owes its birth to a massive expansion of London beginning around 1720. The boom created an area of aristocratic houses and exclusive clubs that became the haunt of high society. Great town houses and extensive gardens stretched from Picadilly to Berkeley Square. The origins of Mayfair are anything but genteel, however. The man who, more than any other, was responsible for putting Mayfair on the map was Lord St Albans, who moved his annual May fair market to Shepherd Market, at the bottom of Hertford Street. The annual May fair became a byword for rowdy celebration and bawdy entertainment. The fairs were finally banned in 1735, but not before they had given Mayfair it's name.
The restrained sophistication of Mayfair began to change somewhat following the First World War, when the traditional life of the landed aristocrat began its slow slide. The Georgian elegance of Mayfair began to give way to an area of trendy shops, boutiques, and restaurants. And yet, even today, Mayfair remains a bastion of high society and fashion.
