Falmouth Heritage Snapshot
The port of Falmouth owes its existence to Sir John Killigrew, a local landowner and governor of Pendennis Castle, at the mouth of the Fal Estuary. In 1613 Sir John was granted permission by King James I to establish a town on land that bordered his own. The Killigrew family encouraged settlement at the new town of Falmouth, and within 40 years the town had grown so much that it was granted a customs house and a market. Local History
