Ambleside Heritage Snapshot
The name 'Ambleside' is thought to have originated in the late Dark Ages, when this area in the north of England was under Viking control. The term is a combination of two Viking words; 'Hamel' (a proper name), and 'saetre', for a farm or pasture land. Hence the original meaning of 'Ambleside' was similar to 'Hamel's farm'.
