Motorists speeding along the busy A66 through Troutbeck may not realize they are following in the footseps of Roman legionaries. The A66 cuts across one corner of a Roman fort, called with great imagination 'Troutbeck 1'. The camp, which is now only recognizable as earthwork mounds, encloses an area of 10 acres (.4 hectares) and once guarded the Roman road from Penrith to Ambleside. Local History
