Hotels in Cockermouth

Cockermouth Travel and Heritage Information
Cockermouth Heritage Snapshot
Cockermouth Castle was built shortly after the Norman Conquest. It passed through owners both noble and regal, including Piers Gaveston, favourite of Edward II. When Maud, sister of Lord Lucy, married Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland sometime around 1380, part of her dowry was Cockermouth Castle. Percy and his heirs, however, were only allowed title to the castle on condition that they adopt the arms of Lucy quartered with their own.
