Grange-over-Sands Heritage Snapshot
Grange-over-Sands was once owned by the monks of nearby Cartmel Priory. It was at that time little more than a village, and it remained such until the coming of the railroad in 1846. Before that time the most common route to Grange was to literally cross 'over the sands'; the sands of Morecambe Bay. Even though the shifting sands are extremely dangerous, they were considered safer than the roads, which were beset by bandits.
