Cheltenham owes its popularity as a Georgian spa town to a flock of pigeons. In 1716 pigeons pecking at salt deposits in a farm field disclosed the existence of a hidden underground spring. A spa grew up around the spring, and with the patronage of George III, Cheltenham transformed from a sleepy village into a gathering place for high society. Local History
